First Acupuncture Appointment: What to Expect + How Many Sessions You Need


You've been thinking about trying acupuncture for a while.

Maybe you Googled it at 11pm after another bad period. Maybe someone mentioned it after you said you were exhausted and couldn't figure out why. Maybe you've just had enough of feeling like your body is working against you.

And then you got to the booking page and thought: what actually happens in there?

Good question. Let's demystify it.

What happens at your first acupuncture appointment

Before you even lie down

Your first session is longer than the ones that follow — usually 75 to 90 minutes. Most of that is us talking.

I'll ask about your main concern, obviously. But I'll also ask about things that might seem unrelated: your sleep, your digestion, your energy at different times of day, your cycle, your stress levels, what you eat, how you feel in different seasons.

This is how Chinese medicine works. We're not just treating the symptom in isolation, but we're looking at the whole pattern. The question "are you more tired in the morning or the afternoon?" tells me a lot more than it might seem.

I'll also look at your tongue and feel your pulse on both wrists (yes, really, we use these as super helpful diagnostic tools).

By the end of the intake, I'll have a clear picture of what's going on and a treatment plan.


The treatment itself

You'll lie on a treatment table, covered in towels and then we’ll get to pinning (the needles are usually placed at your lower legs, forearms, abdomen, back & head).

The needles are nothing like the ones you're imagining. They're hair-fine, single-use, and sterile. Most people feel either nothing, or a dull, achy, heavy sensation at the point - that's what we call the de qi sensation, and it means the needle is doing its job.

Once the needles are in, you rest. Usually 20–30 minutes, where most people fall asleep.

That's it.


After

You might feel deeply relaxed. A little floaty. Occasionally, people feel a bit tender or tired for 24 hours. All of this is a normal part of your body responding. Recommendations: Drink water, take it easy if you can.


How many acupuncture sessions do you actually need?

Honest answer: it depends on what we're treating and how long it's been going on.

But let's get one thing straight first.

Acupuncture is not a one-and-done. It's not a two-and-done either. The way acupuncture has worked for thousands of years, and still works today, is as preventative medicine. Regular, ongoing treatment that keeps your body regulated, your nervous system supported, and your hormones communicating properly. Before things spiral. Before you hit the wall.

In Chinese medicine, the goal was never to see your practitioner when you were already unwell. It was to keep you well in the first place. That philosophy hasn't changed.

That said, here's a rough guide to what realistic treatment looks like:

Acute issues (a new injury, a cold, a stressful week) → Often 1–3 sessions is when you’ll notice things are relieved.

Hormonal and cycle concerns (PMS, painful periods, irregular cycles, PCOS) → We're working with your cycle, so we need at least 3 of them to get a real handle on what's happening and start shifting it. That's roughly 3 months of consistent (ideally, weekly) treatment. After that, we move into maintenance — less frequent, but ongoing — because this is the kind of thing that needs tending, not a one-time fix.

Fertility support → We work within the 90-day egg quality window. I typically recommend weekly treatment for at least 3 months before a natural conception attempt or IVF cycle.

Burnout and nervous system regulation → Varies. Some people feel a shift after 2–3 sessions. Building lasting resilience in the nervous system takes longer — 8–12 sessions is common for noticeable improvements, that last between treatments.

Chronic conditions (endometriosis, longstanding fatigue, anxiety) → Ongoing support, especially in the early stages. We reassess regularly to make sure you’re on track and feeling improvements and changes. We start weekly, then move to fortnightly, then monthly or seasonally.

Why does it take more than one session?

Simply, because you didn't get here overnight. The period pain that's been there since you were 14, the exhaustion that's been building for three years… these take time to unwind.

Acupuncture works cumulatively. This means that each session builds on the last. The first few, we're getting your body's attention. After that, we're shifting patterns and your body knows what to do with the pins. And once things are stable, we're keeping them that way.

I always reassess at the 4–6 session mark. If you're not seeing any change, we talk about it. Acupuncture isn’t in the business of indefinite treatment; we’re here to have you actually feeling better.


What it feels like to be a patient here

My clinic is small and intentional. You won't be rushed. You won't be given a generic treatment.

I work with women who are tired of being brushed off — by their GP, by the internet, by their own tendency to just push through. The women I see are often at a point where they've tried other things, or they've been told "everything looks normal" and they know that's not the whole story.

The first appointment is as much about you working out if I'm the right fit for you as it is about me understanding what's going on. That matters to me.
